I was really surprised how easy it can be to make plant-based milk, when I tried out the recipe of “The Plantpower Way”. There are many recipes of homemade nut milk. But I really like the fact, that it is possible to make it within 5 minutes for immediate consumption. We like to drink this white drink with its mild taste just as it is or sweetened with a little honey. But you can also refine it with spices, mix it with granola or use it in other recipes. This particular cashew milk is not the only thing I like about “The Plantpower Way”. This book contains many elements that make it not only a cooking inspiration, but also a life inspiration. The content is so positive, that I close the book full of hope and with a smile in my face, whenever I’ve read some pages.
Here is my review of Rich Roll and Julie Piatt’s “The Plantpower Cookbook”.

Who are Rich Roll and Julie Piatt?
Rich Roll Julie Piatt live with their four children in a beautiful house with a large garden near Los Angeles. They have devoted their lives to the “Plant Power Way” and rave about the enormous energy and vitality that they have thanks to this lifestyle. But that was not always like this. Rich Roll used to be overweight, worked 80 hours a week and felt completely drained. Inspired by Julie Piatt who could completely cure a golfball large cyst on her neck with ayurvedic herbal therapy and nutritional changes, he decided to change his life. He met this decision on the eve of his 40th birthday. Since then, he has followed a completely plant-based diet. Today he is considered one of the fittest men in the world, completed ultra marathons and triathlons with remarkable results and inspired countless people as a bestselling author and public speaker and with his podcasts. After the success of other books, he decided with his wife Julie Piatt to publish a cookbook, that would offer an insight into the secrets of his life conversion and allow other people to go the same way.

Here is a beautiful video in which they present themselves as well as their book:
How are the recipes?
The recipes are from Julie Piatt. They are all completely plant-based. The focus is clearly on the health aspect. All recipes are extremely nutritious. Fresh vegetables and fruits, wholesome grains and legumes as well as all sorts of nuts form the basis. The so-called superfoods are well represented. Fresh herbs can also be found in most of the recipes. In spite of all the health benefits, the taste is not missing out. Julie Piatt and Rich Roll are aware that a good life has clearly to do with pleasure. There are some ingredients that are added into a dish to make it at the same time healthier and more special regarding the tast. Personally, I would not necessarily have had the idea to do it like this. I am thinking, for example, of a mushroom sauce with macadamia oil, a tomato sauce with Brazil nuts and cocoa nibs, or a ginger turmeric latte with hemp seeds. The recipe chapters are organized as follows: Smoothies & juices, milk & cheese (of course this refers to plant-based creations based on nuts and grains), sauces & dressings, breakfast & brunch, soup, main dishes and sides, lattes & teas , cakes & sweets.
What else can you find?
In total, the “Plantpower Cookbook” has over 300 pages. They are not only filled with recipes. The book is written very personally. In the beginning it tells the inspiring story of Rich Roll Julie Piatt. Thereafter, a number of different food groups are presented. Then, there are instructions for germinating and fermenting as well as a presentation of Rich Roll’s 10 favorite superfoods. Recommended food storage and basic kitchen equipment are also described in detail. Between the recipes, you’ll find again and again small chapters in which the authors answer frequently asked questions. Among other things, the following topics are addressed: “Blending or juicing,” “But where do you get the protein from?”, “Back to roots” or “Food & creative achievement”. The reader can also opt for one of three lifestyle paths – “vitality”, “power” or “conversion” – and get matching tips and recipes. There is a personal comment for each recipe. Mostly we learn more about the contained nutritional values and their benefits.
What is particularly good?
I especially like that the reader is picked up where he is. Every person who is even just a little bit interested in a healthy and vegan diet may feel concerned. It’s amazing how the authors manage in a pleasant way to build a relationship with the reader. What I personally like most about the book, is the often repeated message that the love with which the food is prepared, is crucial. The “Plantpower Cookbook” is illustrated with many photos of the Roll family. As mentioned, it is full of positive content, so that every time you read some pages, you’ll close it full of hope and with a smile in your face. The authors describe the book as a party in which their positive changes are celebrated. I find that one feels this intention. The recipes are very versatile and give wonderful ideas to experiment in the kitchen. In my opinion this is especially true for the creative delicious sauces and dressings. Most of the dishes are very easy to make.
What could be better?
Although many people photos are very beautiful, there is a lack of quality in some of the recipe photos. However, they still look tasty. As in many health cookbooks, in my opinion it should be further emphasized that despite all the wonderful tips and inspirations, at the end each person has to find out individually what is best him or for her.
For whom is this book interesting?
The book is absolutely suitable for people who want to have a happy and healthy lifestyle with a plant-based diet. It does not matter how far you’ve gone in this way already. I also recommend “The Plantpower Way” to people who are interested in basic vegan recipes. It contains various recipes for nut cheese, plant-based milk , protein meals or smoothies. Those who like to get to know new ingredients and combinations, will find it. The ” Plantpower Cookbook ” is ideal if you are looking for hope, motivation, inspiration and knowledge about personal development, life changes and nutrition.
Recipe
As I said, I have decided to share with you not one of the totally delicious main dishes, sauces or dips created by Julie Piatt, but the basic recipe for a cashew milk. The reason for this is that I find this creamy and mild cashew milk simply brilliant. It is so easy to prepare and can be enjoyed immediately. According to “The Plantpower Way” cashews have fantastic healing powers. Their good fats promote heart health and can reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. They also contain a lot of iron, selenium, zinc and magnesium. Here you can watch the video, in which I prepare this cashew milk:

CASHEW MILK
lactose-free, soy-free, gluten-free, plant-based (vegan), raw
2 servings
Level of difficult: very easy
Preparation time:
Ingredients:
- 25 g cashews
Directions:
The cashews should be soaked overnight in water with a little salt. Then, throw away the soaking water. Blend the cashews with 500 ml water in a high-speed mixer. I use my hand blender. To protect the blender, I make some breaks in between. Pour the cashew milk through a fine sieve or a cloth. This last step may be omitted, if you like the small pieces in the beverage.

And here you can buy the book:
