We already know the organic restaurant Bacio, located in the heart of Basel for a long time. Since we had totally positive memories, the Ayurvedic cuisine currently particularly interestes us and we were in Basel anyway to get to know Melanie Gerber and to make a Portrait of her, it was obvious to go there again. We spent a wonderful evening with great conversations and tasty food.

Here our dinner review of the Bacio in Basel.

Quality
The ingredients used are from the organci food store «Eichblatt», which is located next to the restaurant and has the same owner. We ordered the vegan Ayurveda plate as a main dish. As a result, we received four bowls. One of them contained mung beans, one boiled pineapples in a delicious sauce, one rice and another winter vegetables in coconut milk. In addition we were served a chili chutney. We really enjoyed the spicy sauces. Everything was cooked in an ayurvedic fashion and fit together very well. We experienced a combination of fresh, sour, salty, sweet and spicy flavors. As for the appetizer, we especially liked the dip while we unfortunately found the samosas a bit greasy and bland. The menu of the restaurant includes not only vegetable dishes, but also Indian boiled meat and fish dishes. Also, the drinks are to a large extent organic.

Service
The service is very polite. In a discrete way, we were asked if everything is right from time to time. When we asked for a wine recommendation, we received very honest and good advice. While she served the meal, the waitress explained us what it was we were getting. At the end she served us cardamom seeds in a nice pot, which we chewed to promote digestion and maintain a fresh mouth taste. We felt that it was important to her, how well we were doing.

Ambience
The restaurant is located directly by the Rhine. In summer, it’s very recommended to eat on the terrace over the water. Wonderful. However, on a cold winter evening, we sat inside of the restaurant were it’s not very decorated. Yet we felt extremely well. The bright space is relatively small, but yet not tight. It has a small bar, where among other things snacks for sale are displayed in the middle. A bookcase with many books on the subject of Ayurveda and food stands at the guest’s disposal.

Price
Food was rather expensive. For four people, it was quite little and only rice was refilled. Nevertheless, the price is fair, when you consider the high-quality ingredients used and how well it is cooked.

These are the four pots, which were filled with delicious dishes and made our main course.

We are already looking forward to our next visit in the Bacio. It’s definitely our favorite place in Basel.
